CULTURAL Audit
• Where does the brand exist in the public perception?
• A BrandBackstage cultural audit reveals the truths behind real-world signals.
• Replace assumption with evidence.
A brand cultural audit tells us how a brand actually lives in the world.
Not through surveys or focus groups, but through the unfiltered signals people leave across conversations, shares, and everyday mentions.
This process examines what people repeat, reinterpret, ignore, and contest. It looks at language, patterns of association, moments of friction, and points of advocacy. It distinguishes between the story a brand tells about itself and the meaning audiences construct in practice.
An audit surfaces three things: where the brand already holds authority, where it is misaligned with audience expectation, and where opportunity exists but has not yet been claimed. It replaces assumption with evidence.
A cultural audit is diagnostic, not decorative. It provides a working map of perception and participation. From that map, strategic decisions can be made with clarity.
Challenge
SoundCloud felt big but misunderstood. The home of what’s next in music, SC found itself in an ecosystem reshaped by TikTok: fast, visible, competitive. Emerging Gen Z artists were openly critical of the platform’s values.
What is SoundCloud for if discovery happens elsewhere and attention is fickle? The streamer needed a sharper role in the lives of artists and fans, and to grow into that new role.
Approach
-
What do people say about your brand when you are not in the room?
• Tracking real conversations and behavior reveals meaning forming beyond your control.
-
Examining internal history and priorities clarifies the identity the brand claims.
What does the organization believe it stands for?
-
• When do cultural insights become practical direction?
• Translating evidence into a growth strategy converts participation into sustained value.
-
• Structured workshops translate findings into decisions, testing strategic options against real cultural opportunity.
• How are insights stress-tested before execution?
Process
Hold authority, exploit friction
Two years of multi-platform social data, over ten million mentions, were analyzed to establish SoundCloud’s cultural locus.
Sixteen forces were indexed against genre, occasion, time of day, and mode of engagement. Direct references, variations, and contextual mentions were tracked across platforms including Instagram, Reddit and TikTok. These perceptions were compared with stakeholder interviews to isolate divergence between internal ambition and external reality.
Gap analysis defined the distance between effort and impact. This told us where SoundCloud held authority, where it faced structural friction, and where repositioning would take the streamer.
Insight
SoundCloud suffered when tied to big-name artists. The company promoted breakout success. The audience valued early stage discovery.
By celebrating artists after they became mainstream, SoundCloud betrayed the very early credibility that gave it authority.
Impact
Executive alignment shifted. Rather than competing with Spotify in the mainstream, SoundCloud doubled down on emerging artists and the tools that support them.
Strategic focus narrowed. Growth priorities reset.
